Equal Justice Works & Student Debt Relief

One of our great organizing committee members, Equal Justice Works, has been working hard to promote student debt relief. Their hard work has paid off! Last year, vital legislation passed to make student debt reform a reality, and it’s finally going into full effect. Check out their press release here.
This legislation, of course, also has a service component. Besides the income-based repayment - which lowers your monthly payments on federally guaranteed loans - there’s also the Public Service Loan Forgiveness that “cancels remaining debt for public servants after 10 years of public service employment.” What’s a public servant? It includes AmeriCorps and Peace Corps, as well as non-profit employment, and more. Find more information here. Tying debt relief to service doesn’t necessarily encourage people who would never have considered service as a career. But it certainly makes it easier for people who want to serve to make that choice, and eases their mind about the weight of their student debt.
